Shortage Of Women Candidates In State Polls A Matter of Concern

On 8th May, International Mother’s Day celebrated all over the world saw large numbers of messages dedicated to mother. Unfortunately, these messages of women empowerment are not reflected in the political scenario of India even till date. According to Hindi News Online, hardly 10% of women candidates are contesting in the current elections across the four different states. In states like Kerala, Assam and West Bengal, the numbers of women contestants have almost become stagnant. On the contrary, in the state of Tamil Nadu, the numbers of women contestants have almost doubled. In the last assembly polls, the percentage of women contestant was about 6% and the percentage has risen to about 11% this year.

It is true that the chief minister of Bengal is a woman, but leaving aside that fact only 10% of political tickets was given to women in 2016. The same situation can even be witnessed in Kerala, where less than even 6% of women contested in the elections. In 2011, both these states almost had the same percentage of women candidates in the state election. As far as, Assam is concerned, it has improved its marginal tally, and the percentage of women candidates has risen from 8% to 9%.

In 2011, despite the participation, the percentage of women winning in all these four states was very low and depressing. Only 9% of women won the elections, as per the records of the National Election Watch. Out of 285 seats in Bengal, only 33 seats were won by women, which amount to approximately about 12%. In Assam, the results were poorer because only 11% of women won seats out of 126. The percentage was even lower in the state of Tamil Nadu, whereby only 7% of women candidates won while in Kerala, the percentage of win was only 6%.

The influence created by the women voters is largely reflected in the promises made by the parties, be it maternity benefits, prohibition and even pension schemes. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu promised to increase the financial assistance recently under a maternity scheme. It was declared that the amount will be increased from Rs 12, 000 to Rs 18, 000. Women will also get subsidy for buying scooters and special training will be provided them for learning to ride. Live Hindi News states, Mamata Banerjee had promised a pension scheme in Bengal and claimed to increase the numbers of police professionals.

In some states, the numbers of women voters outnumber the male ones. States like Rajasthan, Bihar, Odisha, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu have witnessed a rise in the female population. Different political parties claim that they are actively wooing the women voters. It was evident in 2014 when the percentage of women voters rose from 55% to about 66%. This can work as a positive point for most of the states to encourage women not only to vote, but also to contest in the elections and win the race against male voters.

@ http://ow.ly/LKpf301lLZ6

Trending Political News - Prime Minister Pays Homage To Dr Ambedkar

On the 125th birth anniversary of Dr, Bhimrao Ambedkar, the Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi paid a homage in New Delhi and said that he was not only the architect of the Indian constitution, but also a ‘Vishwa Manav’. He devoted his life to the service of the marginalized and poor. Prime Minister tweeted and said that he always believed in the power of education. The economic vision of Dr Ambedkar was completely unique because it laid a strong emphasis on the well-being of the workers and farmers. The main function will be held in the lawns of the house complex of the Parliament.

Live Hindi News portals covered up that in the main function, there will be several political leaders, and people from different walks of life. They will pay homage and floral tributes to the statue of Baba Ambedkar. In order to remember his contributions for the country, functions will also be held throughout the capital and other parts of the country. His contribution towards drafting the constitution of the nation cannot be forgotten. He is a prominent figure of the Indian nationality.

This day is being observed as the Day of Social Harmony. According to Political News in Hindi channels the Minister of Social justice and Empowerment, Thaawar Chand Gehlot congratulated different people on this occasion. In a statement, he said that Babasaheb Ambedkar was responsible for laying the foundation of the social reforms in the country. In fact, he laid in the true sense of the term, and therefore people should respect his effort by strengthening the social harmony in the country. This will turn out to be the greatest tribute for him in the years to come.

He played a major role in eradicating the caste system and untouchability from India. However, his efforts will be in vain if the country does not continue to follow his achievements. The question that arises in this context is whether India has really succeeded in prohibiting the thoughts of untouchability.

Previously, the Prime Minister compared Dr. Ambedkar to the iconic leader Martin Luther King. He was iconic of King Luther who fought for the oppressed. He also represented the voice of the marginalized. Modi even said that only talking about him in relation to India will be injustice done to him. He was indeed a great person who always stood against any kinds of inhuman incidents and behaviours. This was said while delivering an annual lecture on the Ambedkar Memorial.

Dr Ambedkar called not only called for the labour reform, but even thought of industrialization at the same time. Therefore, his contribution towards the progression of India cannot be overlooked. Even today, his ideals are considered as highly valuable and it is the responsibility of every citizen of India to respect that. This is regardless of any political party or ideals. It will be a big mistake to label him as only the voice of the Dalits because fighting the caste system was one of his many contributions to the country.

Political News - Mamata Banerjee Warns BJP against Playing Hindutva Card in Bengal

On Wednesday, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee was found to accuse the BJP of ruining the peaceful environment in the state with the use of their Hindutva Card. She cautioned the saffron party against playing any form of communal politics. She even said that irrespective of their tactics, they will not get any dividend in her state. She expressed her concern saying that BJP is trying to bring its ultra-Hindutvad from outside. The main aim of this policy is to create some riots and communal tension in the state.

She stated clearly that she is totally against communal politics and do not want any form of riots. On the contrary, they want to stay in a peaceful environment within the state. This was claimed by Banerjee at an election rally in Burdwan district near Purbasthali. Those who are trying to divide Bengal on the basis of communal lines with Hindutva Card will get a fitting reply from the general people. BJP will not be successful in achieving its mission in this state. In her election rally, she claimed many other things against the BJP.

In an exclusive Political News in Hindi statement, she said that Central is jealous of the peace that West Bengal holds. Hence, the reason to conduct Assembly Elections in different phases in the state. The Congress, CPIM and BJP never want any peace in Bengal. Banerjee urged her audiences to defeat everyone and cast their votes in favor of Trinamool Congress so that the state can be taken forward in the coming days.

She even attempted to slam the alliance of CPIM and Congress in Bengal, and claimed that both these parties are actually suffering from insecurity. They are therefore fighting for their own survival by relying on each other. Congress is suffering from identity crisis, Mamata expressed clearly in her statement. Therefore, the party is trying to ride on the back of CPIM. However, Mamata clearly said that nothing would help these parties to improve their position in the state. At the same time, even Bengal won’t experience any sunrise from the ongoing elections. The party experienced their sunset right after the incident at Nandigram.

According to Hindi News Online, she stated due to misrule of the Marxists since the 35 years, the condition of West Bengal is in a horrible state. They have completely finished the state. It is because of this reason that the current government has to pay huge debts obtained from the legacy of the Left. She even added that her government was carrying out all the development works irrespective of fund constraints and non-cooperation from the centre.

Addressing another poll meeting before, Banerjee was highly confident over winning the Assembly Elections and said CPIM will never return to power. The results will be announced on May 19, where the TMC government will step into its sixth year. BJP will have to leave Bengal and Congress will become signboard parties. The opponents are trying to destroy the peace situation of Bengal, and she and her party will emerge as the winner in the elections.
